Jose Xtravaganza

Jose Xtravaganza was born José Gutiérrez, and he is the father of the House of Xtravaganza.

One of the most widely-recognised ballroom personalities in the world

Jose emerged from the Harlem ballroom community in the 1980s as perhaps its most prolific dancer and choreographer. He is best known for his work with Madonna.

Starring in How Do I Look

In the beginning of shooting for How Do I Look, Jose Xtravaganza didn't attend any balls, because he felt there was nobody on his level to compete against.

Yet, once Wolfgang became friendly with assistant director Luna Khan and Carmen Xtravaganza, that's when Jose agreed to be interviewed for the documentary.

At the time then, the House of Xtravaganza went through some changes, and Jose became the father of the House. Jose started to come out again, first walking Legends, Statements and Stars and later he started competing again. His biggest rival was Andre Mizrahi.

Jose’s quote about How Do I Look : “I love it !”

More about How Do I Look

Jose Xtravaganza starred in How Do I Look, an independent vogue (dance) documentary released in 2006 that gives us a cinematic look at some of the legends, icons, and members of ballroom community that influenced pop culture around the world.
